Surgery, particularly a challenging and long one, usually requires delicate care and precision movements to achieve success. Many instruments and tools are used to perform the surgery. The scrub tech plays a vital role in performing many important actions before and during the surgery. Learn what scrub tech safety is and what is involved with it below.
What is Scrub Tech Safety?
Scrub tech safety involves the gathering, counting, and accountability of the sharp and delicate instruments that are used during surgeries. The scrub tech, also known as a surgical scrub technician or an operating room technician, handles the accountability and maintenance of the instruments during the surgery. Learn some of the specific responsibilities and actions this technician needs to take before and during surgeries below.
Actions and Tasks This Technician is Responsible For
Before a surgery, this technician must prepare the patient for the surgery. As a result, they must clean and shave the area that is to be operated on. They sterilize the instruments to be used and do everything possible to keep the area bacteria-free so as to prevent possible infections.
During a surgery, this technician will “scrub in” to help maintain the sterilization of the area while the other medical personnel conduct the surgery. In addition, the technician will provide the surgeon with the required instruments as needed. This means the technician must know what tools and instruments will be required at specific points of the procedure to ensure the surgery is done as expeditiously as possible.
After surgery, the technician will ensure no sharp instruments are left within the patient by accounting for every instrument and either properly disposing of them or sending them for proper cleaning and sterilization.
