There are two main types of Malibu drug addiction treatment counseling options that have been shown to play a positive role in a patient’s ability to fully recover from their addiction. Below, we will talk about each of them and how they affect the recovering addict.
Individual Drug Counseling
Individual drug counseling takes place between the recovering addict and an addiction counselor. The addiction counselor is trained in counseling addicts in order to help them throughout their recovery process.
The counselor has many goals for their patient in this process. For one, they try to focus on reducing the chances that the patient will decide to go back to using again. They also focus on highlighting all of the damage that their addiction has caused. They help the patient understand how their addiction has affected their employment, there friends and family and anything that goes against the law.
The counselor will work with the patient to help them understand both the short-term and long-term ramifications that their addiction will cause. While the patient is in treatment, they are expected to maintain abstinence from the drug. The counselor helps them focus on this so that they do not slip up.
The counselor will check in with the patient’s progress with their 12 step recovery. They will make sure that the patient is being held accountable for their progress in the program. They spend a lot of time with the patient and will make any necessary referrals if the patient needs any medicine, employment help or psychiatric help.
Group Counseling
Malibu drug addiction treatment group counseling usually consists of a counselor and a group of recovering addicts. The idea of a group counseling session is that it places recovering addicts together with other recovering addicts. They talk about their story and it makes it easy for them to relate to one another. Often times, they will find a lot of similarities with what went wrong in their life as compared to what went wrong in another’s. This has been shown to go a long way in helping the recovering addict fully understand the ramifications of their addiction.
This type of setting reinforces the benefits that are created with peer to peer discussions and help to get the recovering addicts to better accept the idea of a sober life going forward. Group therapy has been shown to play a significant role in influencing the success rates of recovering addicts.
