Most of the top brands and styles use a slip collar attachment for the uprights, which allows them to telescope up or down and then, which a simple twist of the locking collar, they are held in place.
The crossbar will also slide in or out of itself to give you the desired length. Usually this uses a system of punched holes on the outside component and a pop-up button on the inside. Once in the right position, the button simply pops up, holding the crossbar at the desired length.
Always look for a backdrop stand made of aluminum as this is durable, travels very well, and is lightweight yet strong. These stands are a great investment and something you will continue to use for years to come.
