Depending on where you are located in Ireland, it may or may not be easy to visit a supplier to look at different features and options in electric wheelchairs and scooters. If you are in the market for a power wheelchair but can’t visit the supplier, there are ways to correctly choose the size that will be best for the individual.

The helpful staff at any mobility equipment sales department should be able to provide assistance on what measurements to obtain for correct sizing. There are even a small number of these sellers who may offer to bring a few different wheelchairs to your location. This can be an ideal way to do a side by side comparison for comfort, fit and ease of operation.

If you are buying a power wheelchair online or by phone, you will need to consider at least the basics to make sure the chair is a good match for the user.

Seat Width and Depth

The seat width in a power wheelchair, or standard manual wheelchair, is measured as you would a seat cushion on a chair. In other words, it is the actual width of the area for the individual to sit, not the external measurements of the chair, which will be significantly wider.

Seat depth is the measurement from the front of the seat to the front side of the back of the wheelchair. Longer seat depths are required for those with longer legs, and shorter is essential for those with shorter legs.

Measuring the Individual

To determine which seat width and depth is required, it will be important to know the measurements of the individual. All power wheelchair models come in different sizes, and finding the best fit is always critical for comfort and safety.

The measurements to take include the individual’s weight and height. Have the person sit in a comfortable, hard chair and measure from the outside of the hips to get the seat width. You will also need the measurements from the back of the bend in the knee to the back where it touches the chair as well as from the bend in the knee to the floor. The sales team at the mobility store in Ireland can provide further information as needed for sizing.
