Without metals like steel, the world would be a much different place today. However, over the years, the need for a strong metal with the ability to resist corrosion has led to the production of aluminum and it sees many different uses like aluminum discs, plate and bar products. But why is this gray metal so special and used in more and more applications today. Let’s take a closer look to discover some important benefits.

What is Aluminum?

Aluminum is present in the crust of the earth and there is virtually an unlimited supply available. However, it takes considerable energy to mine bauxite ore and turn it into useable material. Yet, it is still a cost-effective solution for many applications which call for metal.

Corrosion

One of the main problems with steel is rust. Once iron or steel is exposed to the elements it starts to rapidly rust. Steel can be coated or painted but there is an easier solution. Things made from aluminum discs or plate do not rust in the weather. In fact, this is one of the most important properties of aluminum and alloys like 5083 offer superior protection against many types of corrosive environments.

Weight

Suppose you need to build a strong structure and are considering steel. Now suppose your structure will be used on the ocean and weight is an important consideration. Aluminum can be used in place of steel in many instances today. It has a high strength to weight ratio and some alloys are highly resistant to saltwater corrosion.

Recycling

Aluminum discs, cans, sheet and many other products can easily be melted down and re-used. There is no limit to the times you can recycle this metal. Recycling is much cheaper than mining and offers a solution to many environmental issues today.
