If you are looking for an interesting neighborhood to settle down in, you should look at Chelsea in West Manhattan. If you are considering whether that ideal apartment or condo for sale in Chelsea NYC is the right one in the right place, rest assured it is if you qualify. Chelsea is the perfect spot for those who love to combine the modern with the historic past.

Everything Old is New Again

If anyone doubts the ability of a community to recycle, refurbish and revamp their old history to address new needs, look at what Chelsea has done with several structures – industrial and residential. Among the most noted and noteworthy are:

  • The former elevated train rails – now the High Line – a park with a beautiful view of the area as well as a perfect place to walk, hold community events and take part in fitness training
  • The old Nabisco Factory – today it is the lively and upscale Chelsea Market. Retaining its old wooden floors and exposed brick walls, the structure now is host to a variety of delightful food vendors and providers. Some see it as a foodie’s version of heaven
  • Chelsea Hotel – a throwback to a dramatic and high class past, the Chelsea Hotel continues to amaze as it attracts a newer generation
  • Starrett-Lehigh Building – once a freight-terminal warehouse, now the home to various office space for designers, artists, and related types of employers and employees

Yet, one of the more interesting projects where history and modern use fuse into a collective that celebrates all levels of society is found in Chelsea Piers.

Chelsea Piers

Between 1910 and 1935, Chelsea Piers was where everyone went to see the luxury liners dock. Among the major ships that docked here, were the Lusitania and the Mauretania. After the periods, the four Piers – 59, 60, 61 and 62 fell into ruins. The nearby warehouses that had stored and passed freight to many an ocean-bound vessel had slowly began to rot until, in 1980, the state of New York advanced a plan to demolish it.

Fortunately, the plan was rejected. Instead, the community decided to convert the piers and surrounding warehouses into a major recreation and entertainment and sporting facility. The result now covers 200,000 square feet. The grounds and facilities include:

  • Bowling Alley
  • Golf Club
  • Hockey
  • Skate park
  • Carousel
  • Swimming pool
  • Sky Rink
  • Soccer field
  • Lacrosse field
  • Field House
  • Basketball Courts
  • Rock climbing wall

There are also many places to wine and dine near the Chelsea Piers. In fact, you can find just about everything to keep you, your family and/or friends busy every day of the year. The Piers is one more reason why, if you see a condo for sale in Chelsea NYC, you need to buy it, now!
