Heavily damaged teeth can be preserved with a crown. This article explains more about your options with said treatment. You do have other options to turn to, but these should be discussed with your dentist. If you would like to know more, contact your local Dentist in Pomona.
What is a crown?
If you have a defective tooth, and it is no longer safe or practical to repair with a filling, your General Dentist may decide it is necessary to use a crown instead. It will make the tooth more durable and will ensure that the tooth does not crack, and thereby risk losing the tooth. In other cases, a crown may be the only way you can get a nice and durable result. Crowns may be made of gold, pure porcelain or a combination of metal and porcelain (ceramic metal).
Gold crowns are the strongest and therefore the best for molars. Both metal ceramic crowns and porcelain crowns look like natural teeth, but they are not quite as strong as gold crowns. Ceramic metal crowns consisting of a shell of gold can be used on almost all teeth. Porcelain crowns are very light and translucent teeth, which make them preferable over all others.
How do I get a crown?
Before you can make a crown, your tooth edges have to be shaped. Next, your local dentist in Pomona takes an impression of the tooth. When that is done, it is sent to the lab. At this point you are probably given a provisional crown, which can be produced with plastic or metal. Plastics are typically used on teeth that are visible, while metal caps are used for molars.
The impression is used to make a plaster model of your teeth. The model is a fabricated crown. Within the crown is an attachment, and it must be corrected so that it fits in your mouth with respect to clenching and color. It may mean that there must be ground at the crown, or the crown must be sent back to the dental technician to change the color. If the crown fits, the Dentist in Pomona will put it on the tooth using a thin cement that acts as glue. Contact your local dentist for more info.
